Sandy and her husband, Gary, are residents of Lakeview, a small town in the Ozarks in north central Arkansas. She is the newsletter editor and webmaster of the North Arkansas Woodcarvers Club (NAWC), and co-chairs the club’s annual woodcarving show and sale, a two-day woodcarving show that is held annually during the first “full” weekend in May at the Baxter County Fairgrounds in Mountain Home, AR (shameless plug).
Caricature carving has opened many doors for Sandy especially since 2011 when she was inducted into the CCA. She considers this a great distinction and enjoys sharing her passion with fellow carvers. Sandy is honored to have been part of the production of the CCA book “Carving a 1930s Street Scene” and then designing and composing their latest book “Concepts to Caricatures – 25 Years of Caricature Carving”.
Recently Sandy has taught seminars from her menagerie of “Critters” with over two dozen of the little guys. For the most part they are carved from a 2″ x 2″ x 3″ block of basswood. Some are drilled for using as bottle toppers while others are toothpick holders. Although simple in design, nature has provided an endless supply of subjects. What began as a few domestic dog and cat Critters for a single-day CCA carving class, has grown to a mini-zoo plus a Santa. The final “Carving” magazine (Issue #45) featured a step-by-step of Santa, and “Woodcarving Illustrated” (Issue #74) carried a step-by-step of the Yorkie.
Besides NAWC, Sandy also is currently a member of the National Wood Carvers Association, the Affiliated Wood Carvers, and the Lakeview Carvers. She enjoys taking classes whenever possible and feels extremely lucky that Gary (and Augie, their cocker spaniel) travel with her for support at the annual CCA meetings.
